Most of the restaurants worth planning an evening around sit within a few blocks of Old Courthouse Square, along 4th Street and out toward Railroad Square. That density is the reason downtown works so well as a base: you can have coffee on Mendocino Avenue, lunch in Railroad Square, a tasting flight in the afternoon and dinner on 4th Street without moving the car.
The range is wider than most visitors expect. There is French bistro cooking, a steak and oyster house, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, Puerto Rican and Caribbean plates, Greek and Mediterranean grilling, sushi, Korean barbecue and a Jewish deli, alongside the farm to table kitchens that Sonoma County is known for. Several rooms are run by chefs who have cooked here for decades, and menus change with what the county is growing.
